Cities are burning, policemen are being murdered, our sprawling wars and occupations continue, terrorist incidents burst regularly like pustules, a budget deficit larger than any in human history continues to grow, immigration threatens to swamp the country&#8217;s demographic makeup irreversibly, and the increasing likelihood of nuclear confrontation with Russia looms.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These comparatively trivial matters have been confined to page 17, as lead headlines rage thus:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 30px; margin-bottom: 20px;\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Donald Goes to the Dogs<\/i> (Maureen Dowd, <i>New York Times<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Trump is an Emetic, and He is About to Be Vomited Up<\/i> (John Podhoretz, <i>Commentary<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Will The Bottom Could Fall Out For Trump?<\/i> (Nate Silver, FiveThirtyEight)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Is Trump&#8217;s Campaign Over?<\/i> (Glenn Thrush &amp; Katie Glueck, <i>Politico<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Donald Trump, Groper in Chief<\/i> (Nicholas Kristof, New York Times)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Dump Trump, Now More Than Ever<\/i> (William Kristol, <i>Weekly Standard)<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Is Trump a Goner?<\/i> (Thomas Lifson, <i>American Thinker<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>A Donald Trump Presidency Would Bring Shame on This Country<\/i> (Ezra Klein, <i>Vox<\/i>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">My favorite is one of the saner articles.\u00a0 It\u2019s satirical, as sanity nowadays would have to be:\u00a0 <i>Republican Party Could Recover as Early as 2096<\/i> (Andy Borowitz, <em>The New Yorker<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One would be wrong to think this pandemonium of pants-wetting horror is restricted to print journalists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 On Youtube,\u00a0<\/span>James Carville happily assures us that \u201c<i>Trump Will &#8220;Quit&#8221; Race\u201d<\/i>; on TV, Bob Beckel sagely\u00a0opines, yesterday,\u00a0that \u201c<i>The 2016 Election, Effectively, as of Tonight, Is Over\u201d<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Needless to say, Trump\u2019s Establishment Republican allies have lost no time getting the boot in:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Paul Ryan refused to appear with The Donald at a scheduled event \u2014 only to be booed by the crowd before he made his announcement \u2014 and since any Republican notable vilifying Trump is immediately guaranteed air time and national coverage, the list queuing to the cameras has stretched long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I haven\u2019t linked to the stories above.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s no need.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They all say the same thing, and it\u2019s the exact same story they\u2019ve presented before, and before that, and before that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Why<\/span>\u00a0linger over <i>deja vu?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet, is there not something taking place before us that is so blatantly obvious that we cannot ignore it? The story being reported is not the real story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The media storm is the story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The<em> real<\/em> story.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A media storm that time and again has little to no relation to its supposed content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After all, the latest Trump flap is something we\u2019ve seen before, haven&#8217;t we?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It was the Khizr Khan story last month, remember?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Before that it was the Mexican Judge story before that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Before that?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Take your pick. \u00a0The list is long, but the format and outrage, the assessments and performers, are rigidly predictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Have you noticed that the curious thing about these stories is that they\u2019re completely vacuous?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>They never have a thing\u00a0to do with the issues before the voting public.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t address in any substantive way any substantive political matter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They have nothing to do with policy, budget, military preparedness, international relations. They are purely and solely personal attacks on Donald Trump.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And they are universal, all-dominating, blared from most every TV screen, computer monitor, radio, and smartphone, and from <i>every<\/i> last newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I\u2019m assuming that you, the reader of this article, are a reasonably well-informed adult.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You know, therefore, that politicians (and non-politicians) sometimes use rather salty language in private.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Truman was famously foul-mouthed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Eisenhower was a soldier \u2014 enough said there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kennedy swore at length, and Johnson at much greater length, wallowing in the \u201cN\u201d word as freely as Nixon did (circumspectly) on the Jewish Question.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Only Jimmy Carter may have been reticent in this regard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As for Obama, a <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalistpapers.org\/us\/obama-talks-about-ribs-and-py-but-theres-more-to-the-story\">video<\/a> of the young President-to-be shows him using the very \u201cP\u201d word that has brought the Fourth Estate to earth-shaking froth and anguish.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of the above to no effect, and no journalistic notice whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I\u2019m assuming too, Reader, that you know that a person can use rather profane language in private without it having any negative impact whatever on their policy preferences, or executive performance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0QED: George Patton. \u00a0And <\/span>If a tape were to surface in which Secretary Clinton privately called Trump a prick, it would not illuminate her stance on immigration, or make it any more or less desirable, or say anything about her ability to implement said policy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would be non-news.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would certainly not get anything like Trumpian coverage or condemnation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would very like not appear at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Of course those are not the only stories that get swept under the rug as all attention defaults to Trump\u2019s venality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hurricane Matthew kills 800 in Haiti and threatens a million Floridians?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Page 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Two more policemen assassinated, and a third is beaten in the street by a mob and hospitalized?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Page 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the same time that Trump\u2019s &#8212;\u00a0eleven-year-old, private<i> &#8212;\u00a0<\/i>crack hit the press, <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/podesta-emails\/emailid\/927#efmFhxFke\">Wikileaks released<\/a> the first 1% of of Hillary Clinton related emails covering material from Clinton Campaign leader John Podesta.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Among other things, it included the content of the near-million dollar speeches given by Clinton to Goldman Sachs and others, content that she\u2019s refused to make public.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Understandably so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy dream is a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders,\u201d notes the Secretary in her secret speech.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou just have to sort of figure out how to \u2014 getting back to that word, \u2018balance\u2019 \u2014 how to balance the public and the private efforts that are necessary to be successful, politically, and that\u2019s not just a comment about today,\u201d notes Clinton. \u201cIt is unsavory, and it always has been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be. But if everybody\u2019s watching, you know, all of the back room discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous, to say the least. So, you need both a public and a private position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One needs to say one thing in public and another in private?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trump is pretty aware of this at the moment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But then Trump is not telling the public that he&#8217;s in favor of open borders and open trade, while privately telling Wall Street bankers something else. \u00a0With a month to go before the election, might some call this \u201cnews\u201d?\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 N<\/span>ot in comparison with Trump\u2019s decade-old case of potty mouth, judging by the <em>Times<\/em>, the <em>Post<\/em>, CNN, etcetera, etcetera.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One wishes even the <i>Trump<\/i> story got better coverage. \u00a0Does it strike no one as odd that the other person on the links, Billy Bush (cousin to Dubya and Jeb, nephew to Herbert Walker, and presumable &#8212; though not confessed &#8212; recording artist) made this recording surreptitiously and kept it around the house for<em> eleven years?<\/em> \u00a0Rather a long time to keep a recording of a foul-mouthed real estate developer, don&#8217;t you think? \u00a0And it surfaces the day before the second Presidential debate?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since making such a private recording public is illegal, that makes promulgating it a crime, doesn\u2019t it?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is Mr. Bush being investigated and charged?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Or has it gone to James Comey for pre-stamped dismissal? \u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s also illegal to make a person\u2019s personal tax returns public.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet when it comes to smearing Trump, these things just mysteriously show up in the<em> Times<\/em>\u2019 mail slot, and no one knows how, and prosecution is not even considered.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>What, the <i>Times<\/i>\u00a0can&#8217;t review its\u00a0security cameras and see who places documents in its mail?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It seems we have a <em>story<\/em> here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One you will never read about in the <i>Times<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Our leading mainstream journalists have high standards \u2014 high double standards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are we surprised?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Not really. \u00a0M<\/span>ost journalists are Democrats, Trump is not, and they would like their candidate to win.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fair enough, but where is even the <i>veneer<\/i> of even-handedness?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sense of <i>limit<\/i> to the relentless assault?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Why, because of a private crack made <em>eleven years ago<\/em>, is Trump declared across the board to be unfit to lead, unfit for polite company, indeed unfit to<em> live<\/em>, according to the occasional calls for his assassination coming from the likes of Bill Maher, Jonathan Chait and even the <i>Times<\/i>\u2019 Ross Douthat?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This goes beyond mere partisanship.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 I<\/span>t approaches social psychosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Consider.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><i>Every <\/i>major newspaper has either endorsed Hillary or, in odd cases, Johnson or Stein.\u00a0 <em>Every<\/em> single one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Out of 1,398 functioning newspapers in the United States, <i>only two<\/i> have so far come out for Trump.\u00a0 One of those is owned by Trump&#8217;s son-in-law.\u00a0 The other is the <em>NY Daily Post<\/em>, whose &#8220;support&#8221; of Trump has been demonstrated by publishing front-page nude photos of his wife from her modeling days after their endorsement.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">All the rest have come out against Trump.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pause a moment and think about that: out of <i>all<\/i> the newspapers in the United States, only two (and those are iffy) support Trump.\u00a0 That&#8217;s 99.99% &#8212; <em>monolithic,<\/em>\u00a0<em>uniform<\/em> opposition.\u00a0 This, in the face of declining readership, declining subscriptions, and a readership base that is close to 50% pro-Trump, and evidence that subscriptions are being cancelled, complaints are being received, and readership is declining directly owing to the relentless stream of the papers&#8217; anti-Trump positions and\u00a0articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Now I am not a conspiracy theorist.\u00a0 But even were this a conspiracy, the Elders Of Zion, much less Rupert Murdoch or Katherine Graham, couldn&#8217;t pull <i>everyone&#8217;s<\/i> strings to this degree. \u00a093% of journalists may identify as Democrats, fine; that still leaves 7% ostensibly contrarian. \u00a0Why aren&#8217;t 7% of the nation&#8217;s papers pro-Trump? \u00a0What, in non-totalitarian circumstances, can possibly account for this<i> total <\/i>shut-out across an entire, ostensibly democratic, nation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">It simply is not statistically possible for there to be complete uniformity on this subject.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Simple financial self-preservation would compel some papers to reflect <i>some<\/i> measure of their readership&#8217;s views.\u00a0 Yet we see total uniformity\u00a0across the board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">As I said, I don&#8217;t think think every last American newspaper has gotten official sealed instructions from the Illuminati to destroy Trump.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 So we are left facing one of<\/span>\u00a0the many uncanny things about this election:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>not the cynicism of the assault on Trump but its irrational herd\u00a0<em>passion.<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have little doubt that every last one of the writers cursing Trump above genuinely believes what they\u2019re writing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>But how can they?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do they really not know that other politicians brag, swear, say things privately that they don\u2019t say in public?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Aren\u2019t they puzzled at the fact that Bill Clinton\u2019s serial rapes, his <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IIOxMi5r2AI\">confessed insertion<\/a> of a cigar into the \u201cP\u201d word of his 22-year-old intern in the Oval Office, raises <em>no ire whatever<\/em> in the purportedly feminist Fourth Estate, whereas they rush in a stampeding herd weekly to star Trump in their recurrent Salem Witch Trials spectaculars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I find myself thinking that the country in general, and the press in particular, is not in the grip not of some willful conspiracy but rather of some undiscovered psychological pattern, some as-yet-undiscovered law of historical materialism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When some group organisms are threatened, all their members draw in to protect it, and lash out at whatever threatens in in all possible ways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Something about Trump challenges some core element of the liberal psyche in the same evocative way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Is it simple envy of his wealth, his success, his unabashed wallowing in those things his detractors don\u2019t have and will never have?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 After all, b<\/span>y common standards, Trump is a success, and there is nothing like the flamboyant success of others to remind some of their own comparative failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Is it his sheer indifference to them, the Randian indifference of a completely independent individual to the hive?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Used to c<\/span>ontrolling or silencing all who embrace its groupthink through public shaming, the group now founders against a figure who neither embraces their views\u00a0<i>nor<\/i> feels shame. \u00a0But, like a fortress whose cannons are fixed, it can only fire the same rounds the same way, doubling, re-doubling, tripling the volleys even as they miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Or is it simply a frantic attempt to extinguish the growing suspicion that, after a half-century of bureaucratic and educational social engineering, the entire liberal project, like the Communist project before it, is <em>not<\/em> <i>working<\/i>, and may be untenable; that the puritanical public exaltation of private decadence into which the left has evolved is inherently contradictory, and foredoomed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Whatever the explanation, Trump clearly exacerbates something not in the liberal <em>mind<\/em>, for he is no Conservative but closer to Bernie in his policies than any other candidate in the 2016 race; no, he abrades something in the emotions operating underneath that mind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The puritans who burned witches were not in <em>disagreemen<\/em>t with the witches: something about the witches drove puritans over some internal edge, and very likely it was the witches\u2019 freedom and enjoyment of those things the puritans would not allow themselves to have or acknowledge or even imagine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><i>Resentissiment?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To some degree.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But this is not a such a cold and reasoned hatred as <i>resentissiment<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rather it has the destabilizing edge of warmer hatred, <i>self<\/i>-hatred.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What these critics of Trump\u00a0<i>dread<\/i> is not Trump\u2019s blas\u00e9 indifference and fiscal invulnerability but their own instability, the instability of their accustomed roles and associated values.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Trump has inspired not a war of the worldviews, left and right, but a sense of the <em>inadequacy<\/em> of both. \u00a0On the Alt Right, surprisingly, wanderings in the paleoconservative wilderness have left them a notable inheritance: \u00a0a sense of independence and renewal. \u00a0But there is no equivalent Alt Left, only lengthening shadows of the Soviet collapse, a Blairish New Labour embrace of globalist neoliberalism that satisfies neither mind nor heart, and a Scandinavian descent into the heart of migrant darkness. \u00a0What fissures then are fracturing in the heads of this latter-day left? \u00a0<\/span>I have a sense \u2014 as do they, I suspect \u2014 no longer of the strength of liberal rectitude and liberal shaming, but rather of the liberal mind collapsing, veering toward shipwreck, as it recognizes its own impotence.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The volume of the howls no longer testifies to strength, but madness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">None of this makes any difference when it comes to the business of casting one\u2019s vote.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One votes for the person with the better policies, and the better track record.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trump\u2019s are novel and his political track record is nil \u2014 there is no question but that he is a gamble.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hillary\u2019s are a continuation of Obama\u2019s failed policies, and her own track record is no less abysmal: militarily disastrous, subservient to corporate rather than public interests, and corrupt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the voting public tends to gamble in its own self-interest, I imagine they will gamble on a possible win with Trump rather than a sure loss with Clinton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">And yet&#8230; larger patterns remain in the dark, furtive and unexcavated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are on the verge of a great mystery<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A number of newsworthy events happened
