{"id":282,"date":"2015-05-27T13:22:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T13:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pascaleditions.com\/colintrafford\/?page_id=282"},"modified":"2015-05-27T19:42:01","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T19:42:01","slug":"why-the-flash","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pascaleditions.com\/colintrafford\/why-the-flash\/","title":{"rendered":"Why In God&#8217;s Name Do I Like The Flash?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1>Why In God&#8217;s Name Do I Like <em>The Flash?<\/em><\/h1>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243;][et_pb_image admin_label=&#8221;Image&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/pascaleditions.com\/colintrafford\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-flash.jpg&#8221; show_in_lightbox=&#8221;off&#8221; url_new_window=&#8221;off&#8221; animation=&#8221;left&#8221; sticky=&#8221;off&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; background_layout=&#8221;light&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;left&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I like <i>The Flash<\/i>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen every episode, I\u2019ve enjoyed every episode, and I look forward to the coming episodes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yet each time I am absolutely puzzled as to why.\u00a0 It\u2019s the sort of show I viscerally despise; its worst elements are so awful you wince. \u00a0<i>It\u2019s horrible! \u00a0<\/i>Yet I can\u2019t enough of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCome now, Colin, what\u2019s so horrid about it,\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 you ask? \u00a0<\/span>Well, where to begin? \u00a0First, there\u2019s the absurd science.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A mad scientist\u2019s experiment goes wrong, sending mysterious radiation throughout a major American (of course) city. The radiation doesn\u2019t cause cancer or fry the population like rats or do any of the things radiation normally does.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What it does do is give selected individuals super powers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once a week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Just i<\/span>n time for the next episode.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The radioactive magic wand gives our hero his abilities right at the start, but others so exposed \u2014 near-invariably villainous \u2014 mutate right in the nick so as\u00a0to get into a spectacular special-effects fist-fest with the show\u2019s lead, Barry Allen, aka The Flash.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our hero (who gets to move at physiologically impossible supersonic speed) wins each time, naturally, and locks the bad guy away in a vigilante underground prison designed, apparently overnight, by the wealthy mad scientist whose evil experiment set off the whole mess, to hold the transgressive \u201cmeta-humans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The laughable nature of the mutant selection process underlying this private prison is embodied by one episode in which the villain turns out to be the muscle-bound bully who made Allen\u2019s life hell years ago in elementary school, and <i>still<\/i> wants to get it on with Allen\u2019s girl. Water under the bridge? Nope. The now super-powered Allen beats him senseless and locks him away <i>ad eternam<\/i> so he can never ever bully ten-year olds or act fresh with his sweetie-pie again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If the science is absurd, and the encounters of good and evil infantile, the political awareness is even more so.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Can<\/span>\u00a0we <em>really imagine<\/em> that the appearance of several super-powered individuals would not get the notice of the Armed Forces and Intelligence Services, who would surely permeate the city <i>en masse<\/i> till they could find, sequester, and replicate those powers so as to use them on the ground in Iraq, if not Ferguson?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or that the 24\/7 camera and satellite surveillance that tracks one\u2019s every move in the Land of the Free (or is it the Land of CCTV) couldn\u2019t get a time-lapse fix on his location?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or even that the police at the police station where Allan\u2019s worked for years can\u2019t recognize his, only partially masked, face?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Absurd. \u00a0<i>Silly. \u00a0<\/i>So\u2026 why do I like it?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I can only think of one thing, and it surprises me:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the acting. The star of most superhero films is the special effects.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>The Flash <\/i>has its rich and meaningless share of that, but its principal attraction are its three leads, Barry Allen (played by Grant Gustin), Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), \u00a0and Dr. Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanaugh).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their female counterparts are wooden \u2014 two dense stumps in a petrified forest \u2014 but these three are sublime; so good that even sidekick roles like Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) and Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) flourish alongside into moving and well-drawn characterizations as the show progresses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesse Martin\u2019s police chief persona is a finely drawn portrait of empathy, honor, civic responsibility and simple decency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cavanaugh\u2019s Wells is as letter-perfect a picture of today\u2019s visionary boomer techno-entrepreneur as I have seen drawn; one half-expects him to roll his wheelchair up on stage and give a rivetting TED talk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And Gustin himself presents Barry Allen with a plausible goodness not unworthy of James Stewart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It isn\u2019t just that these are exceptionally well drawn portrayals of somewhat vacuous characters, thespian silk purses made of writerly sow\u2019s ears \u2014it\u2019s that they\u2019re thoughtful, three-dimensional, <i>positive<\/i> characterizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The one character eventually shown to be a bad apple wrecks an otherwise fascinating characterization, but even so their company would be welcome in the (equally welcome) complete absence of a plot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would that they were playing the leads in a straight drama instead of the CGI piffle they inhabit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But what they do with that piffle!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The cast of <i>The Flash<\/i>, like the cast of <i>Star Trek<\/i>, comport themselves as almost devoid of original sin, yet with enough depth and humanity to make them believable and appealing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No sociopaths these:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>not a House, Dexter, Walter White or Eddie Bauer among them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We like the show because we like \u2014 and respect \u2014 these people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cavanaugh, my favorite, gave Season One particular depth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The tension between his thoughtful, humane\u00a0exterior and (as the gradually revealed series villain) his Machiavellian designs could not have been better done, though needless to say comic-book plotting requirements gradually reduced this fascinating character to monodimensional absurdity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The other bad guys were less than laughable, but Cavanaugh\u2019s ambiguity through most of the season was substantive and nuanced enough to lend the entire tale a looming<em> gravitas<\/em>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I could not help but think of Jobs or Oppenheimer watching this portrait \u2014 parts I hope future casting directors reserve for this superb actor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The acting is virtually the only virtue of <i>The Flash<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who may we praise for inspiring these players to lavish such skill on roles so clearly deserving of contempt?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whoever it is, they&#8217;ve managed to raise drivel into drama, and riveting drama at that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That said, there is one other element of <em>The Flash<\/em> that\u2019s a pleasure too: the plausibly presented, complete lack, of racism. Again, it\u2019s a tribute to the actors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Racism is a constant, complex, brooding presence in American life, touching almost everything.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many another program aiming strenuously to be color-blind does it so cloyingly as to strike a false note throughout; Flash\u2019s multi-racial cast certainly does <i>not<\/i> present a realistic portrait of the ways things are in America, but \u2014 as in <em>Star Trek<\/em> \u2014 here such things are simply put aside, and it is a genuine pleasure to see a world where color counts for nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Is there anything science fiction writers, or writers in general, can learn from <i>The Flash?<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>From the plots and scripts, nothing; they\u2019re less than a joke, and at season&#8217;s end the buffoons at the narrative helm have apparently written two of the strongest leads out of the script entirely.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As with <i>Sliders<\/i>, I fear we may be witnessing another case of production executives leading possible sublimity into the abysm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But from the players themselves, we can learn much about the supreme power of character, and sympathetic character at that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is so compelling about these people?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is it only that there are things that they passionately desire, and that those things are good?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 Perhaps that&#8217;s enough<\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A considerable lesson in this age of dystopia.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_4&#8243;][et_pb_contact_form admin_label=&#8221;Contact Form&#8221; captcha=&#8221;off&#8221; email=&#8221;cwtrafford@gmail.com&#8221; title=&#8221;Email Colin&#8221; \/][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><div class=\"et_pb_section et_pb_section_0 et_section_regular\" >\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row_empty\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>Why In God&#8217;s Name Do I Like The Flash?<div class=\"et_pb_row et_pb_row_1 et_pb_row_empty\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>I like The Flash.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen every episode, I\u2019ve enjoyed every episode, and I look forward to the coming episodes.\u00a0Yet each time I am absolutely puzzled as to why.\u00a0 It\u2019s the sort of show I viscerally despise; its worst elements are so awful you wince. \u00a0It\u2019s horrible!
